November Athlete of the Month

In an effort to get to know the fine folks of CrossFit Austin, we embark on our Athlete of the Month series.  Each month we will spotlight a different CFA athlete.  This month we have Queso Dealer/ Thruster connoisseur Dave Kiehl.

State your Name and/or Nickname please.
(listing no Nickname will result in a “nicknaming contest” via the comments)

David Kiehl

Occupation?
Manager at Maudie’s Hacienda

Words to live by?
Do it to it!

What is your fitness background?
Excluding kids sports, nothing.  This is the first serious regimented exercise routine I have ever done.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
Seven months.  I love it.

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
The community atmosphere.  I really like the competitive nature of the program but also how we consistently support each other to excel.

What are your training goals?
Short term to finally master the kipping pull-up.  Long term to be the best athlete I can be.

Favorite sport or activity?
Crossfit, of course.  Outside of that hiking and backpacking.

Recent/Future adventure you’re planning?
As many of you know I just returned from a rather leisurely cruise to Alaska.  I am in the early stages of planning my return to conquer the Wrangle-St. Elias Ranges.  Hopefully, I will be doing this in August 2010.

Tell us something we don’t know about you?
A year and a half ago I challenged myself to get into shape.  In that time period I have lost almost 90 pounds.  This has been the single hardest and most important event in my life.

Longhorns or Aggies?
Aggies, class of ’08.  GIG’EM AGGIES WHOOP!!!!!

Is Maudie’s Queso as addictive as heroin?
No.  Recent studies have proven it to be as addictive as pure Afghani opium.  For any further comments you will need to contact our lawyers.

Does your lack of a mustache hinder your performance in your chosen profession?
I have found that my lack of mustache actually lowers my “creepy level” on the “creepy scale.”  This allows me to easier interact with my clientele.  However, a handlebar mustache would be awesome!  That may be my next adventure?

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words?
“Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential.”

I believe the rules state: “listing no Nickname will result in a ‘nicknaming contest’ via the comments.” Let the games begin!

Dave…I am so proud of all that you have accomplished before CF and since you’ve started! You are inspirational! And, if you need a travel buddy to head back to AK in August, I am volunteering with all my heart:)

As for a nickname…I need to think on this one…but you definately require a nickname!

“Queso” seems too obvious, no?

Dave – you friggin rock – had no idea the strides you’ve made – congrats, and keep up the good work!!

I like “Kiehler”, similar to Killer, but with more of an upscale grooming products ring to it.

Comment by Boone — November 2, 2009 @ 12:01 pm

“upscale grooming products” love it.

Congrats on your accomplishments, Dave! Way to inspire others :)

Congrats to Dave, but I must admit I am jealous. I put on 90 lbs. and no one congratulated me on my hard work. Do you know how many Cheetos 90 lbs is?

As for a nickname… given Dave’s fondness for Alaska and his tenacious, non-stop efforts, how about “Musher?” Being called a musher in Alaska is a high compliment. Or maybe, “Six Dog Dave?” A musher who runs six dogs in a race is pretty confident of himself and his dogs, because with more dogs you can keep going if one or more gets hurt. Perhaps just “Sled Dog?”

Comment by JJ — November 2, 2009 @ 3:08 pm

J.J…I totally vote for Six Dog Dave!!!

Comment by Tristy "Mac" — November 2, 2009 @ 3:27 pm

Dave–
U are a total awesome guy and crossfitter..U have a great attitude toward achieving your goals in Crossfit, and in life, and that is something u should be ultra proud of…U will soooo master that freakin Kip, and that will be a great day..!

(Queso and beer??…after the challenge, of course!..)

**Those are awesome nickname choices, Boone and JJ. I like “D Dog” or “Kiehler”

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it. I like the whole upscale grooming products name. And I agree with Tara, that it is just plain evil to bring up queso in the middle of the paleo challenge.

Comment by Dave — November 2, 2009 @ 6:04 pm

you know how queso gets when it sits out? Ew. I picture it doing that inside my body, and that seems to help a bit, ha. Here’s a more paleo-friendly food post.

Got the idea of one of the blogs posted here and wanted to share my success story: Tonight i sauteed up a chicken breast, then instead of pasta, I grated up zucchini into long thin threads. Throw that in the pan for only a minute, then add a little homemade spaghetti sauce.

So excited because this is better than pasta! Great texture, loads of flavor…and zucchini is pretty inexpensive. Cant wait to try a million more variations! mix up the veggies, experiment with sauces…or slice the zucchini thin as a substitute for lasagna “noodles.”

Next up, cauliflower “rice!”

Great job Dave….as for nicknames, how bout the Con”queso”dor!!

Comment by Blake — November 2, 2009 @ 9:38 pm

this is all too funny! i must vote on Kiehler!!

p.s. to expand on Walker’s post about veggie “pasta”, since it’s squash season, look for spaghetti squash. one good size spaghetti squash will make enough “noodles” for at least 4 people. it’s yummalicious too!

Comment by Tara — November 2, 2009 @ 11:22 pm

6D Dave is my vote. You tha man Dave.
